Getting started

How to Get IPTV in the USA: 6 Simple Steps

To get IPTV you need three things: home internet of at least 10 Mbps, a device that runs an IPTV app (Firestick, Android TV, Apple TV, smart TV or phone), and a subscription. Start a free trial, install the app, enter your login, and you can be watching in about 15 minutes.

Step 1: Test your internet where the TV is

Run a speed test on the TV device itself, not on your phone beside the router. On a Firestick you can install a speed-test app from the Appstore; on a smart TV, open the browser and visit a speed-test site. Note the download speed and run it twice, once in the afternoon and once at 8pm, when your neighborhood is busiest.

If you get less than 15 Mbps on the TV, fix that first. Move the router closer, switch to the 5 GHz band, or run an Ethernet cable. Our guide to fixing IPTV buffering covers this in detail.

Step 2: Choose your device

The device matters more than most people think. A cheap, older stick can stutter on 4K channels even on a fast connection. In order of how easy they are to set up for IPTV:

  1. Android TV / Google TV devices (Nvidia Shield, Google TV Streamer, Onn 4K, TCL and Sony TVs): install players straight from Google Play. Android setup guide.
  2. Amazon Fire TV Stick: the most popular IPTV device in the US. Some players are in the Appstore; others install with the Downloader app. Firestick guide.
  3. Apple TV 4K: excellent picture and polished apps such as IPTVX and iPlayTV from the App Store. Apple TV guide.
  4. Samsung and LG smart TVs: works with apps from each TV's own store, though the choice is smaller. Smart TV guide.
  5. Roku: the trickiest, because Roku limits third-party players. Roku guide explains the workarounds.

Step 3: Pick a provider and start a free trial

Never pay for a year up front without testing. A trial lets you check channel quality, the guide and support on your own connection. When you compare providers, use the ten questions in our best IPTV subscription checklist, and read is IPTV legal in the USA so you know what to look for.

Our IPTV free trial lasts 24 hours. You will get login details by email within minutes.

Step 4: Install an IPTV player app

The provider supplies the channels. The player app is what you actually use to browse and watch them. Good players include:

  • TiviMate (Android TV, Firestick): the closest experience to a cable box, with an excellent guide. Premium features cost a small yearly fee.
  • IPTV Smarters Pro (most platforms): simple and widely supported, good for beginners.
  • IPTVX and iPlayTV (Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, Mac): polished and fast.
  • GSE Smart IPTV (Apple and Android): flexible and well established.

Only install players from the official app store or the developer's website. Modified "premium unlocked" APKs are a common source of malware.

Step 5: Enter your login and load the guide

Your welcome email contains one of two login types. Xtream Codes login (server URL, username and password) is the easiest and loads channels, movies, series and the guide in one go. An M3U playlist URL works with almost every player; add the separate EPG (guide) URL from the same email so program times appear.

Give the app a minute or two on first load while it downloads the channel list and guide. Then set your favorites, so the channels you watch most are one click away.

Step 6: Test at prime time, then pick a plan

During the trial, watch the things you care about at the times you normally watch them: the evening news, a live game on a weekend, a movie on a Friday night. If the picture is stable and support answers quickly, choose a plan. Twelve-month plans cost the least per month. See IPTV plans and pricing.

How do I buy IPTV safely?

  • Buy from a provider with a real website, written policies and a support email that replies.
  • Pay with a credit card or another method with buyer protection.
  • Avoid "lifetime" deals. Servers cost money every month, and these services rarely last.
  • Start short. Buy a 3-month plan after the trial, then switch to 12 months once you are happy.

How much does it cost to get IPTV?

Getting started can cost nothing beyond the subscription. If your TV is already smart, you can use a built-in app store. If it is not, budget for a streaming device:

ItemTypical costNeeded?
IPTV subscriptionAbout $8 to $20 per monthYes
Streaming stick (Fire TV, Onn 4K)$30 to $60 one timeOnly if your TV is not smart
Premium player app (e.g. TiviMate)Small yearly feeOptional
Ethernet adapter for a stickAbout $15Optional, recommended

Compare that with cable, where box rentals alone often cost $10 to $15 per TV every month. Full numbers in IPTV cost in the USA.

Getting IPTV on more than one TV

Each TV needs its own device or app, and your plan needs enough simultaneous connections for the number of screens playing at the same time. Install the same player on each device and use the same login. Two practical tips:

  • Count the screens that are realistically on at the same time on a busy evening, not every screen in the house.
  • Give each household member their own favorites list in the app, so the kids' channels do not clutter the sports list.

Check connection limits on the pricing page. If your household grows, support can add connections to your plan.
