Why Roku is different
Roku is the most popular streaming platform in the US, but it is also the most locked-down. Apps (called channels) must come from the Roku Channel Store, and Roku regularly removes third-party IPTV players. That is why the setup looks different from a Firestick or Android TV.
| Method | Quality | Ease | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel Store player | Good | Easy, if available | Anyone, when a player is listed |
| AirPlay from iPhone/iPad | Very good | Easy | iPhone households with a 4K Roku |
| Screen mirroring from Android/Windows | Fair | Medium | Occasional use |
| Add an Android TV or Fire TV stick | Best | Easy | Everyday IPTV viewing |
Method 1: Use a player from the Roku Channel Store
- Press Home on your Roku remote and scroll to Streaming Channels (or Search on newer Roku OS versions).
- Search for M3U or IPTV player.
- Read the description: look for support for M3U playlist URLs.
- Select Add channel, then open it and paste your M3U URL. Some players let you enter it from your phone's browser, which is much easier than typing with the remote.
Availability changes often. If you cannot find a working player, use Method 2 or 3.
Method 2: AirPlay from iPhone or iPad
Many Roku 4K devices and Roku TVs support Apple AirPlay. Check under Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit.
- Set up IPTV on your iPhone or iPad using our iPhone guide.
- Make sure the phone and Roku are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Start a channel, tap the AirPlay icon in the player, and choose your Roku.
- Lock your phone screen if you like; the video keeps playing on the TV.
Method 3: Screen mirroring from Android or Windows
- On the Roku, go to Settings > System > Screen mirroring and set it to Prompt or Always allow.
- On Android, open Quick Settings and tap Smart View, Cast or Screen mirroring (the name varies by brand). On Windows, press Windows + K.
- Choose your Roku and accept the prompt on the TV.
- Open your IPTV app on the phone or PC and play a channel in full screen.
Mirroring sends your whole screen, so quality is lower and notifications will appear on the TV. It is fine for occasional viewing.
The simplest permanent fix: add a $30 to $50 stick
If you plan to watch IPTV every day, plug an Android TV or Fire TV stick into a spare HDMI port on the same TV. You keep Roku for your other apps and get full IPTV players with a proper guide. Follow our Firestick guide or Android TV guide.
How to clear the cache on a Roku
If channels stutter or apps act strangely, clear the Roku cache with this remote sequence from the home screen:
- Press Home 5 times.
- Press Up once.
- Press Rewind twice.
- Press Fast Forward twice.
The Roku will freeze for 15 to 30 seconds and then restart. Nothing is deleted except temporary files. For other buffering causes, see fix IPTV buffering.
Frequently asked questions
Does Roku support IPTV?
Not natively in the way Android does. You can use a Channel Store player when one is available, AirPlay, or screen mirroring.
Why was my IPTV app removed from Roku?
Roku periodically removes third-party players from its store. Switching to AirPlay or adding an Android-based stick avoids the problem.
How do I clear the cache on my Roku?
Press Home 5 times, Up once, Rewind twice and Fast Forward twice. The Roku restarts with its cache cleared.
