How to Set Up IPTV on a Smart TV

On most smart TVs you set up IPTV by installing a player app from the TV's own app store, then entering your login. Google TV and Android TV models (Sony, TCL, Hisense) have the widest choice. Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) support fewer players, and Vizio works best with AirPlay, Chromecast or a plug-in stick.

Samsung smart TV (Tizen)

  1. Press Home on the remote and open Apps.
  2. Select the search icon and search for IPTV or M3U.
  3. Choose a player that supports Xtream Codes or M3U playlist URLs and select Install.
  4. Open the app. Many Samsung players show a device ID or MAC address and a website where you enter your playlist from a phone or computer. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Enter the login details or M3U URL from your welcome email, then restart the app to load channels.

Some Samsung IPTV players charge a small one-time activation fee to the app developer. That fee goes to the app maker, not to your IPTV provider.

LG smart TV (webOS)

  1. Press Home and open the LG Content Store (called Apps on newer models).
  2. Search for IPTV and pick a player that supports M3U or Xtream Codes.
  3. Select Install, then open the app.
  4. Enter your login or playlist URL directly, or via the developer's website if the app shows a device ID.
  5. Add the EPG (guide) URL in the app settings if it does not load automatically.

Google TV and Android TV models

Sony Bravia, most TCL and Hisense models sold in the US, and Philips Android TVs give you the same options as a streaming box. Open Google Play, install TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro, and sign in. Full steps are in our Android TV guide.

Vizio and other TVs without a good player

  • AirPlay: most Vizio SmartCast TVs support AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad. Set up IPTV on the phone (guide) and AirPlay to the TV.
  • Chromecast: cast from an Android player that supports it.
  • Plug in a stick: a Fire TV Stick or Google TV Streamer gives you the full experience on any TV with HDMI.

Smart TV tips for smoother IPTV

  • Connect the TV with an Ethernet cable. Most smart TVs have a port, and TV Wi-Fi chips are often weaker than a streaming stick's.
  • Update the TV firmware in Settings > Support > Software Update (Samsung) or Settings > General > About this TV (LG).
  • Turn off motion smoothing for sports if you notice artifacts; it can exaggerate compression blocks.
  • If the TV is more than 5 years old and sluggish, a $30 to $50 stick will usually perform better than the built-in apps.

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch IPTV on a Samsung smart TV?

Yes. Install an IPTV player from the Samsung Apps store and enter your login or playlist URL.

Do I need a box for IPTV on a smart TV?

Not usually. Most smart TVs can run a player app. A stick is helpful on older TVs, Vizio models, or when you want the TiviMate guide experience.

Why does IPTV look worse on my TV than on my phone?

A big screen shows compression more clearly. Choose the FHD or 4K version of the channel and connect the TV by Ethernet.
